This department is offering 4-year B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology under the Faculty of Science. Total credit hours of the program are 160 with 8 semesters during 4 years.

Message from the Chairman

We welcome you on behalf of the faculty members, staffs and students of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Sheikh Hasina University of Science and Technology (Proposed new name Dr. Momtaz Begum University of Science and Technology) . It is one of the few private universities in Bangladesh that has got a permanent campus from beginning.

Biochemistry and Molecular biology is the study of biochemical processes in living organisms at a molecular level. It deals with the structures and functions of cellular components such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and other biomolecules. It also deals with the interactions between the various systems of the cell, including the interactions between DNA, RNA and protein synthesis and regulation. Students of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology study the biochemical reaction inside cells in order to understand the genetic and molecular basis of cellular processes. There is also an increasing demand for life scientists to contribute to the public understanding of science for example, by developments in molecular biology. In the public sector, Life Sciences graduates are in demand in research institutes, government departments, the National Health Service, forensic science and the Environment Agency. Commercial sectors that actively recruit graduates from the Life Sciences include the pharmaceutical, food, biotechnology, water and agriculture industries. The field of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is rapidly growing with widespread applications in many areas of biological and medical sciences. The demand for the graduates with the expertise in the fields of Biochemistry and Molecular biology is increasing day by day both in home and abroad. Our department of this university intends to educate students with the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge of biological & life sciences and also help to prepare them to be skilled to enter any research or industrial institutions of the related fields.

The faculty members are highly qualified, energetic and very efficient, mostly graduated from well reputed advanced universities. All teachers have Doctoral degrees (PhD) and have many peer-reviewed scientific publications in different national and international journals.

The Bachelor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of this university is a four year program divided into 8 semesters (2 semesters/year) requiring completion of 146.5 credits.

  • Biochemists are required in forensic DNA lab to investigate crime scene evidence by using various sophisticated molecular technique like DNA fingerprinting.

Biochemistry is a highly demandable subject. Our students get job into job market much earlier since the degree is awarded in 4 years (Cost effective). Courses are taught in English by internationally renowned faculty members.

Biochemists have career opportunities in diverse fields and industries worldwide including: biotechnology, foods and beverage, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, nutrition, health, medicine, agriculture, environment, and in diagnostic laboratories. In Bangladesh, several Research institutes/Organizations recruit Biochemists; Such as BIRDEM, ICDRB, BCSIR, to name a few.
